What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is the muscle between the stomach and esophagus. The LES is responsible for keeping stomach acid out of the esophagus, but when it doesn’t work properly, acid reflux can occur.

Tommy’s Story

Our creator and founder, Tommy Stern, has struggled with acid reflux for years. He found himself waking up in the middle of the night choking and gasping for air. The experience was so frightening that he felt like he was going to die. He struggled so much that he would stay up for four to five hours when the attacks would hit and was left with a painful burning sensation for days.

After visiting his doctor and being diagnosed with GERD and a hiatal hernia, Tommy’s doctor recommended he cut back on certain foods and provided him with other tips to reduce attacks. While he noticed some improvement, it wasn’t enough. That’s when he decided to take matters into his own hands and create the Reflux Guard™  Under Mattress Wedge. After working with his brother, an engineer, Tommy designed the first Reflux Guard™ Under Mattress Wedge for himself but soon realized he wanted to share his invention with the world to help others.
